The Bowl of Baal is another pulp "lost race" novel by Robert Ames Bennet. In this tale O'Brien, an American pilot, flies his monoplane out of Aden to search for archaeological sites in the Arabian desert. He discovers a vast crater containing an oasis supporting a society of ancient Assyrians that maintain their worship of Baal and Ishtar plus a mysterious entity called "The Devourer." O'Brien is mistaken for Baal himself due to his red hair and strange monoplane. Society in the crater is split between the followers of Ishtar and her priestess Istara and the cult of the Devourer under the priestess Tigra. The rivalry between Istara and Tigra is inflamed by their romantic interest in O'Brien.I won't explain any more for those who wish to read the novel.The story is fast moving and full of action. I almost forgot to mention the cannibal Noadites, a race of cavemen that live in the crater and prey upon the Baalites. |

It's good. Bennet was pretty good, though obscure these days. |
