"At the end of my little tour through KwaZulu Natal, I went to the Buffalo River and the legendary battlefield of Rorkes Drift. Many of you are probably familiar with the defense of this mission station from the legendary film "Zulu". Here 150 British and colonial soldiers successfully fought against the attack of 4,000 Zulu warriors. No wonder this event was celebrated in the British Empire after the defeat of Isandlwana and it rained Victoria Crosses for the defenders after the successful battle…"

Do others know a quirk of the battle that I don't? Why do all those men of the 24th have their helmets on backwards? Looks daft and unsoldierly. |

Interesting – and I suspect the person who put the helmets on was not quite clear on front from back! |

Backwards helmets would give more shade to the eyes while firing. I assume that's something individual's might do on occasion. |
