As the title says. Looking to do skirmish action between the Apache and U.S. Cavalry (28mm scale). Recommends for figures for both camps. Apache could be dog soldier or regular. U.S. cavalry – I am guessing that the uniform might differ somewhat from the troops that fought the Sioux, but I could be wrong. Recommendation of figures with any pictures (if possible) would be great. Rules, to be honest I don't think I have heard of any but there must be some. Many thanks.

Sorry, forgot to include the word Indian after the word Apache in the first post. My tired old eyes.

I believe Dog Soldiers were a Cheyenne tribes thing. I think I remember it being like a military order for certain bands of Cheyenne.

I'm not sure the Apache had dog soldiers.

And Gringo 40s just came out with some beautiful Apaches, but from an earlier period.

Rules:

Legends of the Old West is very good. Essentially Lord of the Rings re-skinned. Best game GW ever made.

I wrote two articles on the Southwest Native tribes with a focus on the Navajo-Apache wars.
A few comments on designing scenarios. The Army main force for escorting wagon trains were foot soldiers infantry or red legs without artillery. The required less food and no forage than Cavalry.
Red cloth head, arm or shirt were significant to Apaches. army Apache scouts did not wear them in general. Rival tribes provides scouts in enemy territory. For example the well known Crow scouts f Custer versus the Sioux. Apaches were not one nation but several rival factions hating each other.
I like the artisan range fr Old West.

I have the Foundry Apaches and they are very good. The Old Glory Cavalry are nice and cheaper than many other companies.

Another plug for Old Glory 25s…All my Apache figures (mounted and on foot) are a nice mix.

As far as rules, we use the Little Wars TV set called, "Ruthless, the Fastest Rules in the west". Plus they're free.

I live in Arizona, so Apaches would be appropriate along with Mexican army guys as well as U.S. soldiers to include some Buffalo Soldiers as well.

If you like The Sword and the Flame, a variant for Indian Wars was published in The Heliograph called "The Tomahawk and the Flame."

If you would like to order photocopies of these issues you can contact me directly at burker1 (at) aol (dot) com.

The Tomahawk and the Flame can still be found online for free.

+1 for The Tomahawk and the Flame. The Apache have their own special rules, like being able to disappear into the terrain, as noted historically. A handful of Apaches can cause a world of trouble for the US Cavalry and settlers. Make sure you watch Ulzana's Raid.
